I may have grave consequences on work and health (1-3). A host of research papers has estimated the prevalence rates of insomnia, mainly in Western countries. Ohayon and Guilleminault (4) presented prevalence rates of insomnia symptoms in the general population of America, Western Europe, and Australia (4, Table 20-1, p. 303f). These rates ranged among males and females between 5.1% and 48.0%. However, other studies have reported a range from 10% to 40% (5-7). More recently, Ohayon and Lemonie (8) stated that the prevalence rate of insomnia in industrialized countries ranges between 10% and 48%.
